Improving Differential Diagnosis of Pathologically Similar Dermatological Conditions to Minimize Invasive Procedures

چکیده
The erythemato-squamous dermatological diseases share many clinical and histopathological attributes making their differential diagnosis a challenging task for physicians. In this paper, we develop a classification algorithm based on previous clinical data to assist dermatologists in differentiating among these conditions. The final embodiment of the model was an optimized SVM with a Guassian kernel (γ = 2-8) combined with principal component analysis (PCA), achieving a maximum classification accuracy of 97.8%, an average sensitivity and specificity of 97.64% and 99.57%, respectively. Feature selection revealed a subset of features with relatively high positive predictive impact (e.g., itchiness of affected area) and relatively negative predictive impact (e.g., age). Optimized models trained on only non-invasive feature subsets (features not requiring invasive biopsy) yielded an average sensitivity of 81.56% and a specificity of 96.78%, suggesting the utility of our model as a first-line screening tool for dermatologists to rule-out the more severe diseases, and thus minimize subsequent invasive testing.

I-40: Non Invasive Prenatal Genetic Diagnosis;Current Status and The Future
Discovery of cell free fetal DNA in 1997 has deeply changed the outlook of prenatal diagnosis approaches as most of the clinically established screening tests are not sensitive/specific enough while the current practical diagnostic tests are also invasive in their nature. The most common prenatal screening test is routinely practiced for the diagnosis of Down syndrome (DS) which includes a 10% ...
متن کاملMR imaging of ovarian masses: classification and differential diagnosis
OBJECTIVE We propose a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) guided approach to differential diagnosis of ovarian tumours based on morphological appearance. BACKGROUND Characterization of ovarian lesions is of great importance in order to plan adequate therapeutic procedures, and may influence patient's management. Optimal assessment of adnexal masses requires a multidisciplinary approach, based o...
متن کاملA Clinical, Histopathological and Immunohistochemical Approach to the Bewildering Diagnosis of Keratoacanthoma
Keratoacanthoma (KA) is a comparatively common low-grade tumor that initiates in the pilo-sebaceous glands and pathologically mimics squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Essentially, strong debates confirm classifying keratoacanthoma as a variant of invasive SCC. The clinical behavior of KA is hardly predictable and the differential diagnosis of keratoacanthoma and other conditions with keratoacantho...
متن کاملCommon Dermatological Conditions in Sports: A Review of Environmental, Traumatic, and Infectious Causes
Athletic participation can be rewarding both mentally and physically, and it should be an enjoyable activity. Oftentimes, however, there are setbacks in participation as a result of injuries and illnesses. Some of these conditions present themselves in the form of dermatological disorders. Dermatological problems in sports result from several causes including environmental, traumatic, and infec...
متن کاملDermatological manifestations of Venous Disease : Part i
Patients with venous disease often exhibit dermatological changes. Sometimes these skin changes are the only clue to an appropriate list of differential diagnoses. Venous insufficiency is the most common venous disease which presents with a range of skin changes. Most people are familiar with venous eczema, lipodermatosclerosis and venous ulcers as manifestations of long-term venous insufficien...
